Chp.1. PROLOGUE.
The Gospel of John begins with a prologue that introduces the major themes.
THE WORD.
BEGINS WITH ETERNITY.
1. In the beginning, was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God,
ã The Word and God are themes.
This statement is probably the most profound
8:14, introductory statement ever made.
2F He was in the beginning with God.
3F All things were made by him, and without him not one thing was made that was made.
Ì “All were made by him” is a theme. It reflects
“In the beginning, was the Word” (1:1) for the
Word preceded all things.
4F In him was life, and the life was the light of men,
W X Life is a theme and light is a theme. Life and
Light relate to, “the Word was God,” (1:1)
5F The Light shines, in the darkness and the darkness did not understand it.
X å “Light” relates to the light of men,” which
reflects; “the Word was God” (1:1) for the
Word is Light. Darkness is a theme, which
contrasts to light.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOHN SENT TO BEAR WITNESS.
6F There was a man sent from God. His name was John.
7F This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the light, that all men through him might
believe.
X D This reflects “the light of men,” (1:4) and
hence, “In the beginning, was the Word”
(1:1)
8F He was not that Light, but he was sent to bear witness of that Light.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE WORD.
9F It was the true light, which lights every man coming into the world.
X D This relates to “the light of men, (1:4) and
hence, “In the beginning, was the Word”
(1:1)
10F He was in the world, and the world was made through him, but the world did not know him.
Ì This reflects; “All things were made
through him,” (1:3) It also reflects; “the
Õ darkness did not understand it”. (1:5) It is an
incongruity or irony for He made the world.
11F He came to his own, but his own did not receive him.
å ù This is an incongruity or irony for He made
them. It is more specific than vs. 10 and adds
Õ emphasises through repetition. It also reflects
“the darkness did not understand it”. (1:5)
Also “His own” reflects “all things” (1:3)
and hence “In the beginning, was the Word” (1:1)
12F But as many as received him, to them he gave power to become children of God, to those that
believe on his name:
Y q D Æ ù “sons of God is a theme, which reflects “the
true light which gives light to every man, “
(1:9) because when a man has light he has the
truth, which is of God, which then reflects
“All things were made through him” (1:3)
and hence; “In the beginning, was the Word”
(1:1)
“His name,” is a theme. It also relates to
“In the beginning, was the Word” (1:1) for
his name is the Word of God.
13F Who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
q This refers to “children of God,” (1:12) which
reflects “the true light which gives light to
every man, “ (1:9) hence “All things,”
(1:3) and hence, “In the beginning, was the
Word. (1:1)
14F And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the
only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
ã Y X D This reflects “his name,” (1:12) because as
flesh He must have a name. It also relates to
“In the beginning was the Word.” (1:1)
“full of grace,” Grace is a theme and reflects
“He gave the right to become children of God.”
(1:12) which reflects, “the true light
which gives light to every man,“ (1:9) and
“the light shines in the darkness,” (1:5) and
“In him was life and the light was the light of
men,” (1:4) which relates to “In the
beginning was the Word” (1:1)
“and truth” reflects, “the light of men” (1:5)
and hence “In the beginning, was the Word”
(1:1) for the Word is Light.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOHN BORE WITNESS.
15F John bore witness of him, and cried out, saying, “This was he of whom I said: He that comes
after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
ã This reflects; “In the beginning was the
Õ Word.” (1:1)
This is an incongruity or irony in that Jesus
comes after John yet was before John.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE WORD.
16F And of his fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
ã W X D This reflects “full of grace and truth,”
(1:14) and “In him was life and the life was
the light of men.” (1:4) and “All things were
made through him.” (1:3) “the Word was
God.” (1:1)
Also “grace upon grace,” reflects “sons of God”
and “his name.” (1:12) which reflects
“the true light which gives light to every man,
“ (1:9) which then reflects “All things were
made through him” (1:3) and hence; “In the
beginning, was the Word” (1:1)
17F For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.
X D This reflects “The word, full of grace and
truth,” (1:14) which reflects “He gave the
right to become children of God,” (1:12)
which reflects, “the true light which gives light
to every man, “ (1:9) and “the light shines
in the darkness,” (1:5) and “In him was life
and the light was the light of men,” (1:4)
which relates to “In the beginning was the
Word” (1:1)
Also; ;“and truth” reflects, “the light of men”
(1:5) and hence “In the beginning, was the
Word” (1:1) for the Word is Light.
18F No man has seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he
has declared him.
ã “the only begotten Son,” reflects;
“The Word became flesh,” (1:14) and reflects
“his name,” (1:12) which relates, to “In the
beginning, was the Word” (1:1) for his name
is the Word of God.
Also “He has declared Him,” is a theme and
reflects, “In the beginning, was the Word.”
(1:1)
THIS ENDS THE PROLOGUE
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THE TESTIMONY OF JOHN.
2. John baptizing.
This introduces the subject of John baptizing .
“This is the testimony of John” must follow, “There was a man sent
from God whose name was John.” (1: 6)
19F And this is the witness of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask
him, “Who are you?”
20F And he confessed, and did not deny; but acknowledged, “I, I am not the Christ.”
21F And they asked him, “Who then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the
prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
22F Then they said they to him, “Who are you? So that we may give an answer to those who sent
us. What do you say of yourself?”
23F He said, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, “”Make straight the way of the Lord,”” .
as the prophet Isaiah spoke.” O. T. prophecy fulfilled. 1.
Y This relates to “The only begotten Son,”
(1:18) which reflects, “The Word became
flesh,” (1:14), which reflects “his name,”
(1:12) for as flesh He must have a name. It
also relates to “In the beginning, was the
Word” (1:1) for his name also is the Word of
God.
24F And they who were sent were from the Pharisees.
25F And they asked him, and said to him, “Why do you baptize
then, if you are not the Christ,
nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”
26F John answered them saying, “I baptize with water: but there stands one among you, whom
you do not know.
å “whom you do not know” illustrates “The
darkness did not understand it.” (1:5)
27F He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I, I am not worthy to
loose.”
ã “not worthy to loose,” reflects, “the Word
was God.” (1;1)
28F These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
This concludes the subject of John baptizing.
